What We’re Learning About Microplastics

There’s growing scientific evidence that microplastics are now present throughout the human body, including in blood, lungs, placentas, and even the brain. Some researchers estimate the human brain alone may contain around 5 grams of plastic, roughly the size of a teaspoon.

Emerging studies are also exploring how microplastics may interact with the gut microbiome, potentially altering bacterial populations and the chemicals they produce. In early research, these patterns resemble those associated with conditions such as depression and colorectal cancer. Scientists are clear that this work is still developing, and it’s too early for definitive health conclusions, but many agree that reducing exposure where possible is a reasonable precaution while research continues.

If you want to explore the research further, The Guardian recently published an article about what scientists are discovering.

For Wild & Pure, this research speaks directly to why our products exist.

Dr. E’s work was shaped by three deeply personal experiences:

  • The widespread use of wet wipes filled with plastics and preservatives

  • Recurring rashes affecting both a grandbaby and an elder parent

  • Her own experience with vulvodynia, and the lack of truly gentle care options

These realities led to a different approach: choosing fewer plastic-based personal care products, avoiding ingredients reported to cause skin and mucosal irritation or allergies, and designing refillable, low-waste systems that reduce everyday contact, without sacrificing effectiveness or comfort.
